Mayflower addresses the Commonwealth <clears throat> Ahem. This is going to be an extremely difficult speech for me to make but I hope that I am able to partially live up the standard set by my dear Great-Great-Grandfather, late Heathcliffe. I'm told His Christmas Speeches have become almost as legendary as He has Himself, and it will always be difficult to follow in His pawsteps. But, I have been delegated this responsibility, and so I must do my bestest. There have been many Trials and Tribulations for us and the humans during 2001. The year started well with the Humans adopting Siegfried and his most beautiful lady-wife, Petronella, early in January with the hope of starting a new line of blue Frenchy boys and girls. This wasn't quite to be but there have been lots of other new arrivals, most notably My Good Self, of course, and some of the other girls and boys. Sadly, we had to announce the very sudden death of my Grandfather, Auberon, back in February but, he'd been a sneaky little lad and left behind an unexpected litter and a lookalike son, Nuts, who has inherited his colouring, character and personality. In May, the humans rescued a badly-neglected blue-butterfly French Lop girl (Penelope) and, with a lot of TLC, gentle care and medical attention, she has positively bloomed since and produced some friends for us in the late summer. She wasn't expected to live beyond 3 days and now the humans are hoping she might become a grandma in the summer. We all play out daily together and have been keeping the humans busy again this year. Once the floods (I've heard about these from the other girls - I wasn't born then) subsided in the spring, the humans set about restoring the garden and terraced the mudbank into three levels of lawn for us to run, skip and play on. Now, once we've finished playing, we then dig in it and watch the humans fill in our burrows in the evenings. It's great fun! A few of us have moved on to new homes - Sapphire was spayed following neglecting several litters and she's now living in the north-west, Moonlight and Twilight have moved to Connah's Quay so Twilight can be re-united with her sister, Bella and half-brother, Blue-Jay; Hyacinth moved to Worcester to become a fluffy house-bunny, Honeysuckle moved in too comfort a bereaved bunny-boy in Ledbury and Cloudberry joined her son, Hugo, in the West Midlands. As for other new arrivals, I am one of them and I moved indoors while my Great-Great-Grandfather was seriously ill in July and mum knew she was going to lose him. I tried to cheer her up - but I had my work cut out and knew it would be an impossible job. I now live indoors though I know I'll never take his place - but I keep trying.... My Great-Great-Grandfather left behind two treasured daughters, Legacy and Nicolette and the humans are hoping they'll produce some black sons and daughters next year. As for me, I keep hearing whispers about a 'date with Jerry' (he's a very handsome, blue boy) but I don't really understand what this means. I'd rather just eat the carpets, TV aerial cable, phone charging cable (that was one of my favourite treats) and a few other tasty cables once the humans aren't watching - even if this means having to leap onto the TV-picture machine and hop down behind it. The top of the ottoman in the lounge was quite a treat, too - until they covered the top of it with VetBed. As for Ross Rabbits, we're all becoming increasingly specialist with about 90% of us being French Lop, Mini Lop or Netherland Dwarf but still focusing on our friendly, cuddly personalities and characters. As for the humans, they're continuing to strive to raise their standards - including increasing the amount of bunny-care information available to our adopters to ensure that none of us ever become caged prisoners, forgotten in tiny hutches at the foot of the garden. With this in mind, we're launching our new Rabbit Care CD on 1 January 2002 - and I feature on it. But,
before I give the CD Launch Ceremony, I have lots of Christmas presents to
unwrap as my Auntie Karen and Uncle Pete have left behind two little parcels for
me, all nicely wrapped up in some tasty paper. And then, once I've eaten
all those, there's a little parcel for me from my late-Great-Great-Grandfather's
ex-girlie-penfriend, Lightning. She's also sent along parcels for the Big
Girl Bunnies, Little Girl Bunnies, Little Boy Bunnies and another one personally
addressed to Siegfried whom, we think, she has her eye upon (whatever that
means?). So, with prezzies to eat - ooops! I mean UNWRAP, here endeth my Christmas Address to the Nation. With lots of love and nose-rubs Mayflower XX
