Heathcliffe's Death

Whilst browsing through one of our earlier websites as the 4th anniversary of losing our beloved Heathcliffe approaches, we found some of his old web-pages so have included them on this site in his memory.

Heathcliffe was the most special bunny you could ever hope to meet and, although he died several years ago, he is not forgotten - and never will be.....

(Please note: The photos were taken in the early days of digital cameras and don't really do justice to the boy!)

SADLY, WE ANNOUNCE THAT OUR BELOVED HEATHCLIFFE DIED ON 27 JULY 2001.

He will always be remembered and loved......

Heathcliffe's page - written  before he died:

(the photos were taken in the very early days of digital cameras!)

HEATHCLIFFE is 5.45kg of thoroughbred French Lop with great character and personality.  He can also be quite vain and often refers to himself as 'The Handsome One' although he allows himself to be informally addressed as 'Heathy-Boy' by people he knows well.

He is a full-time, free-range  house-rabbit and completely litter-trained.  This, in itself, has been amusing - particularly to visitors.  He will suddenly dash downstairs with his  "Don't stop me - I'm bursting!" expression on his face, leap into his litter tray, relieve himself and then run back upstairs!

He accompanies his owner everywhere and has been known to enjoy drives to the local supermarket to stock up on his favourite carrots and cabbage.  Around the house, he trails his owner, like a puppy, sits between her ankles while she's working in the study, leaps on her knee while she's sitting in the lounge and has been known to scramble into her bed and tuck himself under the duvet.

One of his 'party tricks' is his apparent enjoyment of being hypnotised.  He'll lie on his back, cradled in his owner's arms, lay his head back, drop his jaw, and enter into a complete trance.  This is also his favourite position for munching on his cucumber sandwiches.

He has many admirers around the country and runs his own Official Fan Club, regarding such membership as the ultimate accolade awarded only to members he personally approves.

He gives an annual 'Address to the Nation' on Christmas Day, coinciding with the Queen's Speech to the Commonwealth and receives many more cards than his owners on Valentines' Day.   In fact, he's popular both with humans and other bunnies and several girl bunnies are known to have his photographs on their bedroom walls.  Lighting, his admirer/pen-friend in Northamptonshire (pictured left with her owner), once had a photo of Siegfried pinned to her 'warren' wall but she made her feelings towards this very clear and immediately tore it down so that only Heathcliffe's posters remained!

A recurrent chin abscess is Heathy-Boy's main problem.  He has a tiny puncture wound beneath his chin and, around his scent gland, is prone to dermatitis.  His chin, therefore, needs daily bathing to keep the skin clean and dry to help prevent the abscess recurring.  However, he finds the bathing quite sore and treating his chin problem is an ongoing medical problem for him.  Being a heavier breed and full-time house-rabbit, he is also prone to occasional sores on his front paws.  However, he believes he is 100% perfect in every possible way - and we tend to agree!

Although married to Sapphire, he also has several other girl-friends and enjoys his role as a stud.  He's the proud father of many, many babies now living in and around  Herefordshire, Gloucestershire,  Monmouthshire and all around the UK.

He is already a proud great-grandfather.

All in all, he's one exceptional big bunny!

(For breeding purposes, Heathcliffe has a genotype of: aaBBCCDDEe)

27 July 2002 - A full year has now passed since Heathcliffe's death.

He is still missed on a daily basis.  He was a one-off and there will never be another bunny to match him and his character.  How lucky I was to have those 2.5 years with him....

27 July 2003 - Still missed and thought of daily.  He now lives on in his lookalike great, great-grandson, Master Wellington.

July 2005 - Close to the 4th anniversary of his Heathcliffe's death, whilst browsing through an old website we found the pages relating to our boy and felt he should be returned to our website .
